Amsterdam Photowalk: An Experiment with Editorial Portraiture

In May 2025, I joined a unique and inspiring photowalk event focused on editorial-style portraiture, set against the sleek urban backdrop of Amsterdam Zuid. With a group of five photographers, five models, and two enthusiastic organisers, we set off for an afternoon of creative exploration—experimenting with light, architecture, and spontaneous collaboration.
As someone who joined this event as an experiment, it was an invaluable opportunity to expand my comfort zone. Working with different models in ever-changing natural light, reflective surfaces, and varying urban textures challenged me to adapt my style and think on my feet. I played with different lenses, used flash in unconventional ways, and even brought out the reflector for some shots—each setup offered something new to learn. One of the most rewarding parts was learning how to guide and pose people effectively, helping to tell a story while respecting the model’s energy and personality.
Beyond the technical and creative growth, the event was a fantastic way to connect with fellow photographers. We exchanged tips, talked gear, shared thoughts on our approaches to portraiture, and got a glimpse into each other's artistic processes. Everyone brought a different perspective to the table, which made the experience even more enriching.
Overall, the day was a reminder of how rewarding spontaneous collaboration can be. While I ended up with a lot of photos (as you’d expect with trial and error), the process itself was full of discovery and joyful experimentation. I'm grateful for the experience—it pushed me creatively, helped me grow as a portrait photographer, and left me with some strong visual results that I’m excited to share.
